How to Deal With a Partner Who Likes to Spend When You Don't

How many of you have husbands who could be sponsored by Cabela’s because they own every single gadget and clothing item? Nobody? Just me?

Having a partner who loves to shop can be difficult for those of us who guard money like the tiger at the entrance to the Cave of Wonders.  You may be really uncomfortable at the thought of paying for things with your hard-earned money and that’s ok!  Everybody regards money differently and communication is key when it comes to finances.

Talk about your goals together

Sit down with your partner and map out your goals for your short and long term future together.  Write down all of your big goals as well as your needs and wants.  Having written down goals can make it easier for spenders to subconsciously cut back.

Budget together

Use your big goals, needs and wants from your earlier sit-down to create a budget.  Your budget should be able to tell you exactly where every dollar is going.  Once you know where your money is being spent, you can identify where cutbacks need to happen, as well as where you may have some more flexibility.  Keep checking in on your budget month-to-month and do not be afraid to adjust where necessary.

Don’t be judgy

Try to avoid talking down to your partner.  You are both in this together and making comparisons between how you each spend money is not helpful!  Instead of making the spending their problem, try framing it as a project you can work on together to achieve your goals.

Talk to a professional

Identifying goals and making budgets can be really daunting, so talk to a professional if you need help!  It could save you time and avoid arguments.

I absolutely love working on budgets, so call me if you’d like to get started or if you need help with an existing budget!
